This includes the crude oil supply chain (well drilling, crude oil production and processing, transportation of the crude oil via pipeline resp. vessel to the refinery) as well as the specific technologies at the refinery to produce base oil group III. The inventory is mainly based on secondary data.0The data set represents the production mix including domestic production. Base oil imports are not considered.Foreground system:
The flow chart presents the different process steps to produce base oil group III which are explained in the following:
Crude oil supply: This includes well drilling, crude oil production and processing and the transportation of the crude oil via pipeline resp. vessel to the refinery.
Atmospheric distillation: The crude oil is heated and fed to a distillation unit at atmospheric pressure where it is vaporized and fractionated by condensing.
Vacuum distillation: The atmospheric distillation residue is heated and fed to a distillation unit for further separation at very low pressure.
Deasphalting: Asphalt is removed from the vacuum distillation residue by a solvent (e.g. propane) at pressure and elevated temperature.
Hydrocracking: The vacuum gas oil (from vacuum distillation) and the deasphalted fraction (from deasphalting unit) are cracked by hydrogen at higher temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst. Aromatics and H2S are removed.
Catalytic dewaxing: Paraffins in the hydrocracker output are converted to more desirable structures by hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst.
Hydrofinishing: Hydrogen is added to the base oil at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst.
Background system:
Electricity: Electricity is modelled according to the individual country-specific situations. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly, individual energy carrier specific power plants and plants for renewable energy sources are modelled according to the current national electricity grid mix. Modelling the electricity consumption mix includes transmission / distribution losses and the own use by energy producers (own consumption of power plants and "other" own consumption e.g. due to pumped storage hydro power etc.), as well as imported electricity. Secondly, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled as well as the share of electricity plants and combined heat and power plants (CHP). Thirdly, the country-specific energy carrier supply (share of imports and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific energy carrier properties (e.g. element and energy content) are accounted for. Fourthly, the exploration, mining/production, processing and transport processes of the energy carrier supply chains are modelled according to the specific situation of each electricity producing country. The different production and processing techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different energy producing countries are considered, e.g. different crude oil production technologies or different flaring rates at the oil platforms.
Thermal energy, process steam: The thermal energy and process steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to emission standards and considered energy carriers. The thermal energy and process steam are produced at heat plants. Efficiencies for thermal energy production are by definition 100% in relation to the corresponding energy carrier input. For process steam the efficiency ranges from 85%, 90% to 95%. The energy carriers used for the generation of thermal energy and process steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity above).
Transports: All relevant and known transport processes are included. Ocean-going and inland ship transport as well as rail, truck and pipeline transport of bulk commodities are considered.
Energy carriers: The energy carriers are modelled according to the specific supply situation (see electricity above).
Refinery products: Diesel fuel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, lubricants and residues such as bitumen are modelled with a parameterised country-specific refinery model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refining techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption, etc.) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific situation with the respective properties of the resources.Crude oil mixNatural gas mixHydrogen (steam reforming natural gas)Supply of 1 kg base oil / lubricants for final consumers.energy_base oil group 2 and 3.jpgLCI resultAttributionalNoneAllocation - net calorific valueAllocation - massAllocation of the foreground data follows the allocation rules of the GaBi refinery model. The feedstock of a process (e.g. atmospheric distillation) is allocated by energy (i.e. mass multiplied by net calorific value of the product). The energy demand (thermal energy, steam, electricity) of a process are allocated by mass.
For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL) production allocation by net calorific value is applied.
For further information on the allocation applied, please see the document "The GaBi refinery model" published by Sphera Solutions GmbHG in 2018 (Online available: https://scn.spherasolutions.com/client/downloads.aspx?product=GaBi&productID=47).
Background data are modelled applying the most suitable option for solving multi-functionality for the respective product. For further information on a specific dataset from the GaBi databases please see GaBi documentation. All data used in the calculation of the LCI results refer to net calorific value.NoneGaBi Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Water Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Agriculture Model DocumentationGaBi Land Use Change Model DocumentationGaBi Energy Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Refinery Modelling PrinciplesCut-off rules for each unit process: Coverage of at least 95% of mass and energy of the input and output flows, and 98% of their environmental relevance (according to expert judgment). The coverage of the exploration and well installation data (crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids) are only 90% of mass and energy and 95% of the environmental relevance (according to expert judgment). The data used to create the inventory models are as precise, complete, consistent and representative as possible under given time and budget constraints.
Data on the crude oil supply chain are based on statistics with country / region-specific transport distances and crude oil composition, as well as industry and literature data on the inventory of exploration, production and processing. Infrastructure data are from literature.
Data on the process steps at the refinery for the base oil group III production are based on average data provided by the "Best Available Techniques (BAT) Reference Document for the Refining of Mineral Oil and Gas", published in 2015 by the European IPPC Bureau (EIPPCB). They are supplemented by data from the document "The GaBi refinery model" published by Sphera Solutions GmbH in 2018, and expert judgements. The only difference between the foreground data for the base oil group II and III production is the data for the hydrocracker which is assumed to be 15% lower for group II than for group III (expert judgement as no data available). LCI modelling is fully consistent.NoneIn terms of the country / region specific crude oil production and refining, missing data of certain parameters has been used from countries with a comparable technology. Data measured at a group of representative production facilities have been used to represent the national production.NoneBasisdaten für ökol.
