However, bauxite ore is the only commercially exploited source of aluminum. Although other types of earth, including ordinary clay, contain aluminum, economics favor the use of bauxite. Bauxite is formed by the action of rain and erosion on materials containing aluminum oxide (alumina). The heavy rainfall and warm temperatures of the tropics provide nearly ideal conditions for this process, and most of the world#s bauxite is mined in these regions. Australia is the leading producer of bauxite, followed by Guinea, Jamaica, Brazil, and Guyana. Greater than 99 percent of the total bauxite imported by the U.S. is supplied by these countries. This analysis assumes that the Canadian supply of bauxite is similar to that of the U.S.
