The following countries are included: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and UKForeground System:
With a thickness comprised between 0.2 and 6 mm, sheet is the most common aluminium rolled product. The starting stock for most rolled products is the DC (Direct Chill semi-continuous cast) ingot. The size of the ingot depends on the size of the DC unit available, the hot rolling mill capacity, volume required for a particular end use and to some extent the alloys being cast. Ingots up to over 32 tons in weight, 500 - 600 mm thick, 2.000 mm wide and 9.000 mm long are produced. Before rolling operations, the rolling ingot is machined to cut the ends (sawing) and to even the surfaces (scalping). According to alloy grade, a thermal treatment of homogenisation may be applied. The DC ingot is then pre-heated to around 500°C prior to successive passes through a hot rolling mill where it is reduced in thickness to about 4 - 6 mm. The strip from the hot rolling mill is coiled and stored before cold rolling which is usually done in the same site. Cold mills, in a wide range of types and sizes are available; some are single stand, others 3 stands and some 5 stands. Final thickness of the cold rolled strip or sheet is usually comprised between 0.2 and 2 mm.
Finishing operations include:
- Sizing, e.g. trimming, slitting and blanking
- Annealing according to alloy grades
- Final surface preparation (excluding coating and/or painting)
The sheet production from sawn ingot up to finished sheet generates about 347 kg of scrap by tonne of sheet. These scraps are recycled into new ingots through remelting which is usually performed on-site in integrated cast houses. This internal recycling of process scrap is part of the LCI dataset for the sheet production as illustrated in the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report (figure 5-3).
The background system is addressed as follows:
"- Electricity, Thermal energy: The electricity (and thermal energy as by-product) used is modelled by using the average European grid mix.
- Steam: The steam supply is modelled according to the European mix with regard to the technology efficiencies and energy carriers used. Efficiencies range from 84% to 94% in relation to the representative energy carrier (gas, oil, coal).
- Transports: All relevant and known transport processes used are included.
- Refinery products: Diesel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, basic oils and residues such as bitumen are modelled via an European mix, refinery parameterized model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refinery techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption,...) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. "Aluminium sheet is found in all of the aluminum industry's major markets. In packaging, sheet is used for instance for making cans and closures. In transportation, it provides panels for automobile bodies and for tractor trailer vehicles etc.. Sheet is used in home appliances and cookware. In building and construction, it forms for instance roofing, cladding etc..eaa 2015_aluminium sheet.jpgeaa 2015_aluminium sheet_process.jpgPartly terminated systemAttributionalIf any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/If any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/If any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/If any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/See chapters 2.2.1.3 and 2.2.5 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/If any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/See chapter 2.2.5 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/If any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/See chapter 2.2.6 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/If any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/European Aluminium90.0See chapter 2.2.5 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/2015If any see chapter 9 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/The dataset covers gate-to-gate system of aluminium sheet production in Europe and Turkey. Dataset includes data partially aggregated by the European Aluminium and the overall quality is very good. Dataset can be used as representative for average European production technology of aluminium sheet. Dataset should be reviewed for potential technology changes in 10 years. No statementSee chapter 2.2.6 ; 2.2.7 and 11 of the 2018 European Aluminium Environmental Profile Report: https://www.european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/environmental-profile-report-2018/
